Peer Support Worker: GBV

The Peer Support Worker will work on a team, and individually, to create and facilitate programming for GBV survivors. Building positive and trusting relationships with participants and partners, timely communication with colleagues, data recording and reporting to evaluators are critical tasks to be performed throughout the project.

Primary Responsibilities:

 

Coordination:

  • Work on a team to thoroughly research and co-design culturally appropriate/ identity   affirming/ anti-oppressive peer support training sessions.

  • Conduct secondary community-based research to identify evidence-based and culturally sound best practices and healing modalities used to serve BIPOC survivors of trauma and GBV. 

  • Collaborate with the other Peer Support Workers working on this project and Project Coordinator to co-create trauma-informed & strength-based programming that focuses on the initial stages of healing from trauma. 

  • Debrief with team members to evaluate and revise programming as it proceeds.

  • Use recommendations from a variety of inputs to continuously improve programming and complete a final report for project funders.

  • Regularly report to the Project Coordinator on aspects of program progression, successes, challenges and learning.

 

Facilitation:

  • Participate in:

    • Community development with other local organizations;

    • Facilitation training specific to this project;

    • Interest based conflict resolution training;

    • Risk assessment/management;

    • Trauma-informed training and;

    • Any other training required for this position.

  • Use empathetic communication and assertive interpersonal skills to guide survivors of GBV through a gentle process of healing and empowerment.

  • Coordinate details of the group such as communicating with building managers, co-facilitators and participants travel or childcare expenses as well as obtaining food and materials for activities.

  • Work to create an environment that is predictable, supportive, and safe for participants. 

  • Build trusting relationships with participants while maintaining healthy professional boundaries. 

  • Regularly practice self-care to maintain the emotional well-being needed to work with those that have been traumatized and openly communicate personal and professional needs for support to the Project Coordinator. 

  • Regularly document important data about programming and feedback from participants to inform revisions of programming.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Written and verbal communication in English is necessary for this position.

  • Strong observation skills and attention to detail.

  • Patience, empathy, and authenticity.

  • Commitment to ethical practice guidelines (eg boundaries, confidentiality).

  • Ability to work independently and on a team.

  • Knowledge of:

    • Trauma-informed and/or Identity-Affirming and/or Anti-Oppressive and/or Anti-Colonial and/or Strength-Based perspectives;

    • Feminism;

    • Community Development;

    • Barriers to accessing support for survivors of GBV on PEI;

    • Emotional healing techniques/modalities.
       

  • Lived Experience:

    • Strengths and Challenges in BIPOC communities on PEI;

    • Gender-Based Violence;

    • Group Facilitation;

    • Past experience working with survivors of GBV.

 

Compensation:

The position has a flexible work schedule at an hourly rate ranging from $22 - $25 per hour for up to 1000 hours with an opportunity of contract renewal.
